Misconceptions Extra - Kathryn and Cam

In 2018 Kathryn and Cam had a miscarriage just after 12 weeks; they found out at a routine scan that the baby they named Dougie had no heartbeat.

In 2019 they thought they were having a normal pregnancy until the 20 week scan showed their second pregnancy together had resulted in their baby having multi cystic dysplastic kidneys and their baby wouldn’t survive outside the womb. They were given two options, to continue the pregnancy or abort. At 23 weeks 2 days Kathryn was induced and had their baby Archer. Archer lived for 45 minutes and died peacefully in Kathryn’s arms.

Their miscarriage of Dougie had been devastating, but the support shown towards them when they lost Archer was incredible. Kathryn felt that the lack of support for their miscarriage made that experience much harder to cope with.

Kathryn and Cam’s story highlights the differences in support and they hope that through discussion improvements can be made for families experiencing miscarriage.
